BOHOL'S VIRGIN ISLAND IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

(SPOT.ph) Planning a trip to Bohol? You might want to rethink that itinerary as the famous Puntod Island or Virgin Island is now off-limits to tourists from September 9, 2024 until further notice.

This means no swimming and other water-based activities in the C-shaped sandbar.

"All water-based activities are not allowed except: gleaning, boat passage to Balicasag Island, and Fishcage operations of Danao United Fishermen's Association (DUFA) operating within the Panglao Island Protected Seascape (PIPS)," the Provincial Government of Bohol said in a post.

Signages have also been placed around the island to inform the public.

The sudden closure stems from rising environmental concerns, particularly after a viral video showed tourists vandalizing coral reefs in a nearby snorkeling area.

The incident is currently under investigation after Bohol Governor Erico Aris Aumentado offered a P200,000 reward for information that will lead to the identity of the boatman and tourist guide who were with the tourists.

No tourists allowed at Virgin Island

According to the Provincial Government of Bohol, the closure was initially set for six months, but it could be extended depending on how well the area recovers. The rehabilitation efforts will focus on restoring the damaged coral reefs and regulating future tourism to prevent further environmental harm.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other beautiful spots to visit while Virgin Island undergoes a much-needed break. Consider visiting the nearby Alona Beach in Panglao to start.
