HERE'S A LOOK AT MINDANAO'S FIRST PLANETARIUM

(SPOT.ph) Much as we already know a lot about outer space, much of it also remains a mystery to many of us. Fortunately for Luzon dwellers, we have long had the DOST Planetarium, Mayon Planetarium, and the National Planetarium for our astronomy learning needs. And while Visayans may have to wait for their own planetarium, Mindanao folks have just gotten lucky: they are already getting their own astronomy center this month. Come mid-May, the Mindanao Planetarium is opening.

Here's a look at the Mindanao Planetarium:

The Mindanao Planetarium is in El Savador City, Misamis Oriental. It's the first full-fledged planetarium on Mindanao Island and will be operated by the Department of Science and Technology PAGASA—much like the DOST Planetarium in Quezon City.

The planetarium, which opens on May 17, will be free to the general public. It will present educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky, and train people in celestial navigation. Maybe after spending an afternoon here, you can look up, point, and identify stars, constellations, and planets.

The Mindanao Planetarium features several rooms including a small astronomical observatory, a gallery hall, and a conference room. This addition to the Mindanao DOST aims to bring Mindanaoans closer to experiencing a clear view of outer space, which should be ideal for students, tourists, and space enthusiasts.

Hopefully, by the time the next major astronomical event comes by, Mindanaoans can already visit the planetarium for telescope viewings and other astro activities.
