TWO PASSENGER PLANES APPEAR TO HAVE VERY NEAR-MISS OVER NY AIRPORT
A near-collision between two passenger planes over a New York airport has sparked a Federal Aviation Administration investigation.
The Delta Connection flight, carrying 80 people, was taking off at Syracuse Hancock Airport at the same time an American Eagle plane was landing just before noon on Monday.
Police footage of the incident shows the Delta plane climbing through the sky while the other plane is descending towards the runway.
But the aircrafts appear to be much closer together than they should be before crossing paths safely.
In the video, the Delta Connection flight is seen gaining speed as it gains altitude before the other plane comes into frame.
The American Eagle aircraft is descending as it approaches the runway but the two planes cross paths and narrowly avoid each other.
They came to around 1,000 feet within each other vertically, according to FlightRadar24.
The FAA has not marked the incident as a 'close call' yet but confirmed it is investigating the incident.
'An air traffic controller instructed PSA Airlines 5511 to go around at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to keep it separated from an aircraft that was departing on the same runway,' a spokesman for the government agency said.
A Delta spokesman said: 'Endeavor Air and Delta will work with aviation authorities as we always do in our shared commitment to safety above all else.'
The incident comes after a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 flying to Baltimore from Portland, Maine had a heart-stopping incident on June 25.
The plane departed from runway 29 at 5:43 am, just two minutes before it was scheduled to open for traffic.
Alarmingly, the runway was undergoing a safety inspection at the time, with a ground vehicle present.
While no one was hurt in the incident, the situation raised serious concerns.
After the near-miss, the ground vehicle driver contacted the control tower, baffled as to why the plane had been cleared for takeoff from a closed runway.
Shockingly, the tower responded that they had never communicated with the pilots.
In leaked air traffic control recordings, controllers are heard repeatedly trying to warn Flight 4805 about the vehicle and the closed runway.
One recording even captures a controller saying, 'just so you know, there is a vehicle on the runway, and it is closed...I tried warning him.'
