TWO PLANES IN NEW YORK CAUGHT ON CAMERA ALMOST COLLIDING MID-AIR
Two planes from major airlines in the U.S. almost collided mid-air.
The two planes involved in the said incident were carrying a total of 159 combined with Delta Airlines flight 5421 carrying 80 passengers while the American Airlines flight 5511 had 79 passengers on board.
Dash camera footage taken by the police showed two aircrafts navigating around an apparent traffic control error that initially had one aircraft cleared for departure from the Syracuse Hancock International Airport, while the other aircraft was also cleared to land on the same runway.
The mishap appears to have been caught first by the American Airlines pilot who asked, “Wait, who’s cleared to take off on 28?”
The American flight was ordered by the air traffic control to “take to the sky” and “go around” to avoid the Delta flight taking off.
Luckily, the two planes did not collide but they did fly extremely close to one another as seen in the footage recorded by the North Syracuse Police.
The video highlights one plane going down as the other goes up, looking like a collision course. However, the aircraft just passed by one another. A police officer from the North Syracuse Police Department noticed the planes and pointed up the sky in panic.
In a report made by CBS News, the planes were 725 feet apart from each other, with the American Airlines plane flying right over the top of the Delta aircraft.
The American aircraft then changed its course so it was no longer following the same path as the Delta plane. This might be what the dash cam from Syracuse police caught on video. From afar, it seems like the planes would crash into each other.
The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the events that led up to this near-death error at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport.
Delta told CBS News that they are working with “aviation authorities as we always do in our shared commitment to safety above all else.”
