NELLIES' COLOURFUL TRUNKS UNVEILED ON CHARITY TRAIL

People are getting their first view of an elephant-themed art trail as more than 70 sculptures go on display in support of a charity.

The elephants, large and small, have gone on show in parks, streets and open spaces in Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield.

The thirty large sculptures, painted by professional artists, will be auctioned off in September to raise funds for St Giles Hospice.

Support for the project had been "fantastic" and "everybody" had wanted to get involved, said Georgia Haynes, from the hospice.

"We had over 400 submissions, but we'd only got 30 large elephants, so we had to go through a really, really hard process, as all the designs were amazing", she said.

The project has taken around 18 months to pull together, from artist's submitting their plans, through to the sculptures being decorated, said Ms Haynes.

"There's been elephants in every single room... we've had lots of them painted here," she said.

The sculptures have been "hidden in plain sight" across the three towns, and people will be able to follow the March of the Elephants trail using an interactive app.

The money raised from September's auction will "absolutely mean the world" to the hospice, said Ms Haynes.
