FESTIVAL BRINGS STREET ART TO COASTAL CITY

A city has taken part in a vibrant celebration of street art, welcoming more than 200 artists from around the world.

More than 100 walls and cubes across Southend-on-Sea's High Street, pier and seafront were transformed into creative expressions of art, as part of the City Jam festival.

The event on the Essex coast ran from Friday to Sunday and visitors were able to follow a map to see the artists' work.

Matt Dent, Labour cabinet member for culture, tourism and business at the city council, said: "It has really brightened up Southend-on-Sea city centre. It was a brilliant success, bigger and better than ever."

The event received more than 800 applications from artists globally to take part.

This year's headliners included:

  • SMUG (Sam Bates): An Australian artist based in Scotland, renowned for photo-realistic murals.
  • WOSKERSKI: A festival regular known for his vivid illustrations, vibrant colours and often ironic, seemingly absurd characters that carry relevant messages.
  • FARID: From Morelos, Mexico, who creates murals reflecting his deep pride in Mexican culture and love for direct public engagement through street art.
  • ACHES: The Dublin-based artist specialises in unique, large-scale murals fusing his knowledge of graphic design and graffiti.

Mr Dent added: "Southend City Jam 2024 has been a tremendous success, showcasing the vibrant spirit and creativity of our community.

"The event brought together renowned artists, residents, businesses and visitors for another fantastic and well attended event that helps put our city on the map."
