NEW BRIDGE TO BE BUILT OVER CANAL AS PLAN APPROVED
A sweeping curved bridge is set to be built over a Derbyshire canal.
The steel landmark will create a new pedestrian link between Long Eaton town centre to West Park over the Erewash Canal.
The area around the new bridge will also be revamped as an events space as part of the project.
Erewash Borough Council approved the plan on Wednesday and said it will replace the current 110-year-old bridge, which is so low people using the towpath under it have to duck.
The old Broad Street bridge dates back to 1913 and is “showing its age”, according to a report to the council.
A report warned: “Structural assessments suggest a lifespan of only approximately a further 10 years.”
It will now be demolished.
The new bridge features a suspension arch and a balustrade referencing Long Eaton’s lace-making industry with a wedding pattern motif.
As well as the higher, wider bridge, the plan also includes a waterside terrace featuring tiered seating for 100 people overlooking the canal and a space for events.
Pontoons on the waterfront will be created to allow kayaks and other small craft to be launched, and lighting will be installed in the vicinity.
Construction of the new bridge and waterfront is set to be completed by early 2026, said Erewash Borough Council.
