EUROPE'S 'BEST COUNTRY FOR CAMPING' HAS YEAR-ROUND SUN AND STAYS FROM £4 A NIGHT

Camping holidays can be a great budget-friendly way of exploring a new area, spending quality time as a family and enjoying the Great Outdoors - but if the weather's rubbish, it can quickly become a nightmare.

Luckily, Europe's best camping destinations have been revealed based on a number of factors including average rainfall, temperature, cost of pitching up and even light pollution, based on a holiday in June.

Topping the list in the rankings from StressFreeCarRental.com is Spain. Although it wasn't the cheapest with an average cost of £250 for a week, the hot and sunny weather as well as the lack of rainfall made the country a go-to for those who want to make the most of the outdoors.

The good news is that there are ways to keep the costs down too. For example, Eurocamp has Spain holidays from £182 in popular spots such as Costa Blanca including access to its on-site pools and facilities, while Pitchup has found a range of campsites in Spain from £4 a night if you're literally just looking for somewhere to pitch up for an adventure.

It's worth noting that if you want to pitch up in Spain, you need to do it in an area that's designated for camping, as wild camping is banned in the country. According to Campanyon, rule-breakers could face fines of up to €800 (approximately £683). Still, there's heaps of choice if you do want to camp - in fact, Tripadvisor has a handy guide to some of Spain's best campsites if you're in need of a dose of inspiration.

John Charnock, CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com said: "Camping and caravanning holidays are becoming popular with families looking for a fun holiday abroad but without spending a lot of money. We’ve analysed 10 popular summer destinations across Europe by looking at factors important to holidaymakers - cost, temperature, rainfall and light pollution.

"Pitching up your tent underneath the stars is one of the most enjoyable things about being outdoors - so that’s why it’s important to avoid choosing a campsite with a lot of light pollution, and our index found that camping in France was the worst for this.

"The weather has also got to be ideal when camping - so analysing temperature averages throughout June showed us that the Netherlands was the coldest at 15.4°C, compared to camping in Spain with temperatures of 22.2°C. The country with the most rainfall is Croatia, with averages of 95.3mm in just one month - and Portugal is the best for a dry camping holiday with 15.9mm of rain.

"Those planning a camping holiday this summer should consider visiting some of the top countries across Europe for an enjoyable week outside with their loved ones."
