LOS ANGELES, California, USA - President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Saturday (PH time) that his trip to Honolulu, Hawaii is just his way of visiting old friends who had helped his family when they were in exile.
“Of course, Honolulu and Hawaii in general have the different dimension also because nga that is the time we’ve been exiled. But that dimension is not some kind of full circle,” Marcos said during the Kapihan with Media before departing San Francisco, California.
“It’s just that I really want to go and see my old friends. These are the people who looked after us after '86. These are the people who fed us. They brought us clothes, they brought food. Kung hindi sa kanila (If it were not for them), I don’t know what would have happened to us,” he added.
Marcos said these people had shown hospitality to his family during the difficult time of their lives. He noted that these people have a special spot in his heart.
“And of course, they occupy a special place in my heart. 'Yung iba, wala na (Others are already gone)… Some of them have passed on. Still, many of them are still there and I’m already in touch with them. I say, ‘I’m coming, I’m coming… You better show up because I want to see you after so many years,’” Marcos said.
“It’s just a kind of revisiting, just visiting old friends that… who shared our difficult times together and helped lighten the load for us in the time of exile,” he added.
Further, Marcos described the State of Hawaii as a “great place to be.”
After the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986, Marcos, together with his father, the late former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., his mother former First Lady Imelda Marcos, and his siblings, fled to Honolulu on a US Air Force C-130.
